Here in St. Louis, they call this dance craze “Sliding” or “Line Dancing”.

Line Dance Connection:

Are you affiliated with any group or groups?

Kris White:

I am one of the six co-founding members of STL FLAVA LINE DANCERS (FLAAVAAAA)!!! I am also a member of ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED.

Line Dance Connection:

How long have you been dancing?

Kris White:

I began dancing at the age of 3 (ballet, tap, jazz). I danced professionally through my youth and teenage years. I also held many talent pageant titles, including 'Miss Ebony Teen Missouri', Miss Galaxy Teen Missouri', 'Mid St. Louis City's Junior Miss' and "Hal Jackson's Talented Teen Missouri'.

After high School, I attended college at Xavier University, New Orleans. I was Co Captain of the Xavier Gold Star Dancers. I came home and began teaching a full schedule of dance classes at my home dance studio, The Pelagie Green Wren Academy of Dance. I began this awesome world of line dancing in 2009.

Line Dance Connection:

How did you get involved in dancing?

Kris White:

I was actually looking for a form of exercise, something other than walking on the treadmill and repeating the same Tae Bo CD! I saw some sliders at a party and thought, “That’s it! I want to do that!” A co-worker told me where sliding was happening every week. The rest is history!

Line Dance Connection:

After you attended your very first class, how did you feel?

Kris White:

Usually, I am a person who doesn’t want to attend anything alone. I took my mom and best friend with me to Studio Blu Night Club. There were no classes, so I just had to pick it up on the floor. This was perfect for me! After attending 2 or 3 times, they didn’t want to commit like I did. I knew I had caught the sliding bug because I began going by myself! I loved it!

Line Dance Connection:

How did you get into choreography?

Kris White:

I had been choreographing dances for over 15 years through traditional dance. However, my FLAVA family didn’t know me during that dance life. When it was time to create a dance to release nationally for FLAVA, I asked them to believe in me. Yes, I was new to sliding, but this was where I was comfortable. This was my lane! That dance was 'STL SWAG', which was nominated for a UC STAR AWARD. This year, STL NO LIMIT was a UC STAR AWARD WINNER!! This is still unbelievable to me!!! My never ending goal as a choreographer is to try to always create a positive feel-good atmosphere when our line dance family is on the floor. A choreographer is only as good as the approval of the dancers dancing the dance!!

Line Dance Connection:

How many dances have you created and what was the very first dance you created?

Kris White:

I have created 19 line dances, 12 as the sole choreographer (3 of which have only been released locally).  and 7 collabs. The very first slide I created was STL FLAVA.

Line Dance Connection:

Of all your dances which one would you say is your favorite?

Kris White:

I cannot name one!! I really like STL NO LIMIT, STL CAFFEINE,  and our newest one, SO ST. LOUIS. Honestly, any dance that makes people say 'hey', packs a floor, or just flat out makes you feel good, it's a favorite for me!

Line Dance Connection:

In your own words, what makes dancing special?

Kris White:

Dancing allows me to express whatever mood I am experiencing at the moment. It can take away feelings that I am not willing to deal with. It can make me even more excited about something that is about to happen. The dance and the music are one. If a song hits me the right way, or if I realize that I can have it mixed and sound like what I'm hearing in my head, that is really exciting for me because I know the dance that I am envisioning is about to become a reality! As I say, 'The planets are beginning to line up!'

Line Dance Connection:

If you could change one thing about dancing, what would it be?

Kris White:

The beauty of line dancing is that it allows every kind of dancer to find a place within this culture, and that, I would never change. Having said that, If I could, I would make sure that all dance events remained reasonably priced for all line dancers to consider attending. I also wish that dance events weren't scheduled at the same time. Sure, I know this is almost impossible. I just want to attend them all and not have to choose!

Line Dance Connection:

Tell me one thing about yourself that the dance community would find surprising.

Kris White:

Most of my line dance family does not know that I sang background for Dennis Edwards of the Temptations! I have also recorded three Christian albums as a young teenager, with a group called The Super Gang. We were nominated for a Dove Award!
