My name is Ray Johnson aka RayToKool.

Where are you from and what city do you call home?

Ray Johnson:

I am from Bakersfield, CA however I call Oakland, CA my home.

What do you do in your professional life? Any hobbies outside of dance?

Ray Johnson:

I retired from U.S. Department of Agriculture (Biological Science Technician) in 2003.

 

My hobbies include photography, wood carving, and stained glass.

So what do they call this dance craze in your home town? Line Dancing, Hustling, Sliding, Other?

Ray Johnson:

In Cali we call it Line Dancing.

Are you affiliated with any group or groups?

Ray Johnson:

My group's name is “The Bay Area Baddest”.

How long have you been dancing?

Ray Johnson:

I have been Line Dancing since 2003.

How did you get involved in dancing?

Ray Johnson:

The music got me involved. I went to the senior center and saw them line dancing. I just had to start learning how to line dance.

After you attended your very first class, how did you feel?

Ray Johnson:

After my first line dance class I felt tired, excited and I wanted MORE!!

 

 

Line Dance Connection:

How did you get into choreography?                                               

Ray Johnson:

My interest in choreography came from my desire to create dances that would complement an artist's music.

 

 

Line Dance Connection:

How many dances have you created and what was the very first dance you created?

Ray Johnson:

I have created eight dances. My first dance was called "Must B The Money".

 

 

Line Dance Connection:

Of all your dances which one would you say is your favorite?

Ray Johnson:

Of all my dances I would say "Left Coast Groove" is my favorite.

In your own words, what makes dancing special?

Ray Johnson:

The music and the synchronized body movements makes dancing very special to me.

 

 

Line Dance Connection:

If you could change one thing about dancing, what would it be?

Ray Johnson:

I wouldn't change a thing. Line dancing has emerged from being primarily for seniors to being loved by the hip hop culture.

 

 

Line Dance Connection:

Tell me one thing about yourself that the dance community would find surprising.

Ray Johnson:

My line dance family might find it surprising that I love heights and want to “Bungee Jump”. LOL
